Professor Dr. Gülay Barbarosoğlu graduated from Robert College in 1974 and completed her BSc in 1978 and PhD in 1985 at the Department of Industrial Engineering, Boğaziçi University. She was awarded the title of Professor of Industrial Engineering in 2000. She has designed and taught courses in mathematical programming and optimization, logistics, operations and production planning, and decision theory.
Prof. Dr. Barbarosoğlu served as Rector of Boğaziçi University from 2012 to 2016, and as Vice-Rector for Research between 2008 and 2012. She has held several administrative roles at the university, including Director of the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KOERI) from 2002 to 2006, Director of the Center for Disaster Management (CENDIM), Chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering, and Head of the Financial Engineering Program.
Internationally, she has taken on prominent roles, including Board Member of the European University Association (EUA) between 2013 and 2017. She also served as Vice President of the Association of European Operational Research Societies (EURO) from 2003 to 2007, and as Turkey’s national representative to NATO’s Research and Technology Organization between 2002 and 2010. During her tenure, she worked in close collaboration with various European universities, government institutions, and civil society organizations. Prof. Dr. Barbarosoğlu is a founding member of the EURO Working Group on Organizational Planning and a member of several professional associations, including INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences), APICS (American Production and Inventory Control Society), and IEPM (International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Production Management).
She is also an active supporter of civil society initiatives. She played a key role in the establishment of the Neighborhood Disaster Volunteers (MAG) Foundation, where she also served on the Board of Directors and as Chair.
Prof. Dr. Gülay Barbarosoğlu retired from Boğaziçi University in December 2016.
Since 2018, she has been serving as the General Director and Founding Representative of Hisar School.
